Light-colored feces, dark urine, and yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes may indicate obstructive jaundice, a disorder in which the flow of bile from the liver into the small intestines is obstructed. Obstructive jaundice is a sign of an underlying disorder affecting the pancreas, liver, or gallbladder rather than a disease in and of itself. Surgical jaundice is another name for it, and it usually requires surgery. By surgery, gallstones are the most common cause of obstructive jaundice and are easily removed. Bile is produced by the liver to aid in food digestion and transport waste products to the intestines for removal. Bilirubin, a result of red cell recycling, builds up in the liver and leaks into the bloodstream when bile drainage is impeded, turning the skin and whites of the eyes yellow.
